Most people who want to camp more do not stop because they run out of enthusiasm. They stop because working out what to buy turns into its own weekend project, and the outdoor industry is very good at making a simple overnight sound technical. We built Camp Unknown to cut that down to a short list. The range covers shelter, cooking, water, light and the small safety kit you should not leave behind, and that is the whole list. If you are packing for a first trip, you can put the entire setup together here without a spreadsheet. If you have been out a hundred times, you already know which of these pieces are worth keeping in the truck.

The best piece of kit is the one you stop noticing ten minutes after you unpack it. Nothing on this site is dressed up as expedition equipment, because two nights in the woods is not an expedition and you should not have to pay like it is. We would rather stock one stove that stays lit in the wind than four that photograph well. Everything here is priced to be used, scratched, packed away wet and pulled out again next month. If something does fail you, tell us and we will put it right instead of pointing you at a form. Then get back out there, because that is the only reason any of this exists.
